No, he's right mate. Historically, thumb down meant that they lowered their weapon and let the opponent live, whereas thumb pointing up meant to kill them. The reason they didn't do that in the movie is because then they would have had to find a way to explain the difference during and no one really cared much about it.

Not exactly the best movie ever but certainly one of the greatest. Don't take me wrong, I adore this movie and think it's a brilliant master piece but in my opinion it goes right up shoulder to shoulder with Saving Private Ryan which is my all time favorite film.
