So I assume you are talking about the SCSI cable plugged into the back, its because he is loadong the samples from a SCSI ZIP DRIVE which you can see on the table to the left (Pete's left) of the MPC. The other cords are plugged in to the amp (for us to hear what he is doing) and the deck (via the mixer to the right.
If he is actually talking about the samples then he has totally missed the point of sampling.

Pure and simple. Easily in my top five all-time producers, but he's the type of fellow that will sit at number one for a few weeks when I'm listening to "Mecca and The Soul Brother" know what I mean? ;)
if you want to see someone who cuts up other peoples music but then actually adds real creativity check out DJ shadow, rjd2, and Prefuse 73.
I find stealing loops and adding vocals boring and uncreative.
Pete Rock is the man, it's not about making things complicated for the heck of it, it's about creating a vibe with the use of your ears, and Pete got some of the best ears in hip-hop, hard to front on.
pete rock and dj shadow are both gods to all of us.
dj shadow is a master of his game, pete rock is a master of his own.
